The city of Miami, Florida was founded on July 28, 1896. During the early years Julia Tuttle, the “Mother of Miami,” convinced Henry Flagler, Co-Founder Standard Oil, to extend the railroad from central Florida to Miami. Henry Flagler went one step further by building a hotel and helping to lay out the new town. By 1900, Miami had grown from a few hundred residents to over 1,600 citizens. The city’s population continued to soar and by 1910, 5,000 people called Miami home.
Today more than 2 Million people live in the Miami-Dade County area. The latest 2010 census reported that among the residents of Miami 60+ languages were spoken and 150 different ethnicities were recorded. This wide array of people and cultures has made Miami a center for art, music, and international travelers. In fact, Miami Beach’s Art Deco District is home to the world’s largest collection of Art Deco Architecture. There are over 800 buildings that were built in this beautiful style. Speaking of style, Mercedes-Benz has been sponsoring a Miami fashion week for the past 10 years. This year, designers featured various swim attire, and, as usual, the entire event was a global success.
Besides giving residents and visitors access to high-fashion events, Miami, Florida is also home to beautiful scenery. Did you know that the greater Miami area is the only metropolitan area in U.S. that borders two national parks? That’s right, when you are in the Miami area you should plan on hiking through the stunning Everglades National Park or take a boat ride through the Biscayne National Park.
